How to Get British Citizenship

British Naturalisation is the process which allows foreign nationals that have been granted Indefinite Leave to Remain or settlement in the UK to become British citizens. To qualify for Naturalisation you should have been free from immigration time restrictions during the last 12 months of the residential qualifying period, which means holding Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) for 12 months or more.

According to British Nationality Act 1981, British citizenship is one of the six different forms of British nationality. The forms of nationality are:

  • British citizenship
  • British overseas citizenship
  • British overseas territories citizenship
  • British national (overseas)
  • British protected person
  • British subject

However, only British citizens and certain British subjects with right of abode through qualifying connections under the Immigration Act 1971, have the right to live and work in the UK. People holding one of the other forms of British nationality may live and work in the UK if their immigration status allows it.

Requirements for UK Naturalisation Application

  • must hold ILR for 12 month or more
  • must be of sound mind
  • must intend to continue living in the UK
  • must be able to communicate in English
  • must be of good character
  • Life in the UK test certificate

Residential requirements

Along with above rquirements you also need to fulfill following residential requirements as well:

  • been resident in the UK for at least five years, 3 years based on marriage
  • not spent more than 450 days outside the UK during the five-year period or
  • not spent more than 270 days outside the UK during the there-year period
  • not spent more than 90 days outside the UK in the last 12 months of the five-year period
  • not been in breach of the Immigration Rules at any stage during the qualifying period

How to Become a British Citizen?

If you meet all of the above criteria, you can apply for British Naturalisation. After approval of your application, you will be invited to a Citizenship ceremony to undertake an Oath and Pledge of loyalty. You will then be awarded your Certificate of Naturalisation which is certificate of your proof of British Citizenship. Once British Citizenship has been granted, you will be eligible for a British passport.
